What Is Abrasive Wheels Training?
Abrasive Wheels: What are they? Do you need Abrasive Wheels Training? What does training entail?
What are ‘abrasive wheels’?
Abrasive particles bonded together make the compound in which abrasive
wheels are made from. These revolving wheels are designed to cut
through strong materials such as metal and concrete. They are often attached to some
form of mechanical apparatus. These wheels are often used in construction work
and are one of the most dangerous parts of machinery to use so all that use them
must be trained.
Things that could go wrong..
Abrasive wheels can break or burst and things can become stuck in them which can
lead to other material being spat out and speeds rapidly changing meaning that it is
greater than the RPM and uncontrollable. Furthermore, fixing the machine can be of great risk to the person performing the repairs. Also, abrasive wheels are extremely
noisy, and the correct PPE should be worn including ear defenders to eliminate
damage to the ears. Dust and flying particles can often fly off the wheels, so it is
also advised to wear safety goggles and a mask to protect your eyes and reduce the
risk of respiratory problems.
Do you need to be trained to use ‘abrasive wheels’?
Basically the simple answer is yes. Without the correct training, you can put yourself and
others’ lives at risk and can you afford a million-pound lawsuit for negligence or
worse, manslaughter? Abrasive wheels training certainly is a requirement for anyone
operating this equipment in the workplace.
So what training do I need? And what does the training entail?
Abrasive wheels training consists of a theory and also a practical test. The exact training
depends on the needs of the worker and company but the course will cover a
number of things including current health and safety legislation, hazards and risk
control measures, correct use and inspection of flanges, guards and accessories as
well as what PPE to wear. Practical aspects including pre-machine checks and safe
set up will also be shown. Basically by the end of the training you will be an expert but it is
advised that management carry out familiarisation training with their staff post course
to ensure the safe usage of the machines.
How long does the training take?
The course is a one day course, with the certificate being valid for three years.
