First Aid Training, Do We Need It?
First aid training? Do we need it? Is it worth it? What’s the likelihood of someone injuring themselves? But we have insurance..
There are so many questions surrounding first aid training and we get enquiries about it on a daily basis. But there are just as many excuses as to why people don’t do it.
Picture this.. I’m an 18 year old student in Burnley working in a bar and I hear a loud thud. So I come around the corner whilst serving food and on the floor and hear a commotion and someone shouting for anyone who has had first aid training. There are approximately 100 customers, 5 bar staff, 1 manager and 3 kitchen staff and out of those 109 people, how many people do you think were first a first aider!? 5? 9? 17? So if you guessed any of those numbers-you’d be very wrong.
In actual fact, there was just me because that is all our employer put through first aid training. That’s right.. 1 person.

It’s easy to make an excuse and not do your first aid certificate but for a day to three days training you could:

b) Support in a dangerous situation.
c) Be eligible for more positions within your company.
d) Receive more pay.
What Is First Aid Training?
So first aid training is just blowing into a dummy ? So how hard can it be?
First aid training allows you to assess the situation to be able to carry out basic life saving procedures because these are important skills in the workplace.
What are the 5 main aims of first aid?
1 – To preserve life.
2 – To prevent the escalation of the illness or injury.
3 – To promote recovery.
4 – Pain relief.
5 – To protect the unconscious.
What does a First Aid Course involve?
In a one day Emergency First Aid at Work Course, attendees are taught a mixture of both practical and theory. Trainees learn how to examine a casualty, how to familiarise themselves with basic life support and learn how to control bleeding and trauma. As a result of the training the trainees will develop essential skills to be able to use in the workplace.
Adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and people need to be available at all times in accordance with the Health and Safety Regulations (1981).
What is adequate and appropriate may differ depending on the circumstances in your workplace. however assistance must be available at all times so that your employees can be given immediate help if they are taken I’ll at work or become injured.
The minimum first aid provision on any work site is:
1 – a suitably stocked first-aid kit with first aid information inside or displayed nearby.
2 – an appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements.
It is important to remember that accidents and illness can happen at any time because that is how life works. It constantly throws situations in your way that we have not necessarily asked for.
In short, a provision for first aid needs to be available at all times so staff have the necessary equipment to safe lives.
Because as an employer, you are responsible to check for hazards and assess what type of provision you need and train your employees on how to deal with situations that arise.
